Katie's KeepersDecember 2003 :: Die for Love by Elizabeth Peters What do you do when you want to get away from the backwater town where you live, and have no money? Use a conference as a business deduction, of course! Forget the fact that you are a university librarian attending a conference for writers of historical romance fiction. They're meeting in New York, didn't you know? Jacqueline Kirby is not going to let her lover or the IRS talk her out of going to New York in order to refresh her cultural senses. Who knows, maybe she'll write one of those books while she's there. It couldn't be that hard. Jacqueline probably could whip out a 400 page book during the conference if it weren't for the old school buddy turned feminist fanatic, another old school friend who's incognito, a little lost teacher from the Midwest, a cover model author who's really an actor, a genteel Southern Lady with an iron fist, and a poisoned pen columnist populating the conference. Toss in a little murder for spice, and Jacqueline's ready to investigate. The third in the Jacqueline Kirby series was originally published in 1984, but rereleased in 2002. I agree with the reviewer who said that it "reads just like a current mystery novel, the only difference being none of the characters duck out to check her e-mail." This story is a wonderfully set up mystery that pokes fun at the early romance industry conferences. Ms. Peters draws vivid characters to populate Jacqueline's world and they help to make the ride all that more enjoyable.
